Fuel Supporting Products

These products are designed to support the maintenance of reliable fuel quality.

Alongside the Fuel Conditioning Programme IPU provides a range of supporting products that can help keep your fuel clean and dry. These include vent traps that protect fuel tanks from atmospheric moisture, Racor turbine filters and spin-on filters that are fitted onto an engine to provide protection from water and solid contamination and the Fuel Purifiner (FP) which is the ‘first line of defence’ removing slugs of water, dirt, sludge and grit.

It is widely accepted that if diesel is stored for longer than 6 to 12 months it will become contaminated with water, microbial growth and solid particulates. The problem will be exacerbated by the increase of biodiesel from a 7% bio-blend (B7) to 15% (B15). While Diesel Defence polishing units remove bacteria that have grown to a significant size, IPU’s fuel additives work directly to kill tiny bacteria and neutralise the ingredients they need to grow.

IPU’s fuel additives are the vitamin boost that keep your stored fuel bug-free and give your gen-sets extra performance.

IPU’s four step fuel conditioning process

Fuel additives are the final stage in IPU’s Fuel Conditioning Programme. The four-part programme is the simplest and most economical route to clean, dry, reliable fuel. It includes:

      1. DieselCheck Fuel Testing
      2. ClearTank Fuel Cleaning
      3. Diesel Defence Fuel Polishing
      4. ADV Fuel Stabilisation

Our short video explains the four stages of the programme and how that can keep your diesel clean and dry.

Modern engines need clean fuel to run reliably. But if left untreated diesel is under constant attack from water, microbial growth and solid particulate, even after cleaning. There is a solution. Diesel Defence fuel polishing systems can preserve your stored fuel to EN590 standards. Greatly improving the reliability and dependability of your critical systems such as standby generators and fire pumps.

IPU’s Diesel Defence fuel polishing systems address diesel contamination in storage tanks

Diesel Defence combines filtration and circulation to keep your fuel clean. The polishers circulate the diesel to prevent pockets of dirty fuel or water collecting in stagnant parts of your tank. Diesel Defence can circulate your stored fuel up to seven times before it passes to the day tank or your generators.

It may sound complex, but the Diesel Defence polishers are designed as a ‘fit and forget’ solution – simply set it up once and it will run unassisted, month after month.

The DD50 and DD100 models even feature an integrated password protected touchscreen controller. Service notifications are clearly displayed on the screen which is visible at any time through a viewing panel. Meaning you don’t need to be an expert or a specially trained operator to use them.

Why is Diesel Defence better than standard filtration systems?

Diesel contamination has many causes. Filtration systems only clean fuel as it passes from your storage tanks to your generators. Whilst they can remove the debris, they do nothing to clear the causes of the problem in the tank.

Unless the cause is treated, filtration systems will be under a constant attack and can become overwhelmed.

IPU’s Diesel Defence fuel polishing systems work at the tank, removing water, microbial growth (a.k.a. the diesel bug) and solid particulate (such as dirt, soot and rust.)

Isn’t filtration a cheaper way to protect my generators and engines?

Relying on filtration has two shortcomings. Firstly, without treating the causes of contamination your filters will be under constant bombardment and at risk of being overwhelmed. Clogged filters will starve your generators of fuel and risk a critical power failure.

Secondly, filters need replacing. The more contaminants they have to remove, they more frequently they need replacing. This places a triple burden on your finances: the cost of the filters, the labour taken to replace them and the cost of the maintenance regime that checks their condition.

Removing the causes of contamination with a fuel polishing system is the most cost-effective and efficient route to clean fuel and reliable power.

What makes fuel become contaminated?

In most countries diesel is made up of 93% petrochemical diesel and 7% biodiesel. The percentage of biodiesel was introduced to reduce the environmental impact of using the fuel. However, biodiesel contains water. It’s there when it’s manufactured and it attracts more water while it’s stored. Water is the enemy of clean fuel:

Diesel Defence DD10 – for tanks holding up to 7,500 litres of fuel

  • water is a contaminant in its own right
  • water promotes microbial growth, otherwise known as the ‘diesel bug’
  • water accelerates contamination from solids like rust

It’s therefore inevitable that diesel will degrade unless it’s properly maintained. Watch our short animation to understand exactly how fuel can become contaminated.

But there is a solution. Diesel Defence fuel polishing systems can preserve your stored fuel to EN590 standards. Greatly improving the reliability and dependability of your critical systems such as standby generators and fire pumps.
