Is it a truth or a myth that engine manufacturers void warranties if I use contaminated fuel?
“Truth, I’m afraid. Here are some of the warranties to prove my point.”
- Cummins: Cummins Power Generation is not responsible for the repair or replacement of Product required because of improper or contaminated fuel.
Cummins Warranty Statement - Himoinsa Power Systems: The following items are among those that are not considered nor will be covered under the existing warranty program.
- Failures caused by any contaminated fuels, oils, coolants, or lack of proper fluid amounts.
- Subaru Industrial Engines: Limitations and Exclusions- this limited warranty shall not apply to;
- Repairs required because of prolonged storage including damage caused by old or contaminated fuel in the tank, fuel lines or carburettor, sticky valves or corrosion and rust of engine parts or use of fuel containing more than 10% of ethanol.
- HGI Generators: HGI Shall not be liable for the Generator’s failure to comply with the warranty if;
- The defect arises as a result of the ingress of foreign objects (including but not limited to the use of incorrect or contaminated fuel or lubricants).
- Kohler Power Equipment: The following items are not covered by this warranty:
- Old or contaminated fuel left within the fuel system, which includes but is not limited to tanks, fuel lines, carburettors or fuel injection components.
- Fuel, lubricating oil, or coolant/ antifreeze.
“So, this isn’t a theoretical risk. Contaminated fuel causes the kind of damage that costs thousands to repair: injectors, fuel pumps, etc.”
“Before an engine manufacturer does this sort of repair under warranty they WILL check that you’ve maintained the engine and fuel correctly. If they can show you’ve used contaminated fuel, the bill falls to you.“
